Professor of Architectural Design and qualified architect. Has taught architectural design and theory in Australia, Newcastle, the University of Tsinghua, Beijing, and was Visiting Professor at the EHESS, Paris. Has professional practice experience in Australia since 1975, recently designing a surf safety centre near Sydney which opened in 2007. Has considerable international experience in curriculum development and course design across four institutions – including a new induction course in architecture for indigenous Australians and new degree courses in architecture for the Maldives. Research areas include place and placemaking, architectural theory and the practice of design. He is now working on a www-based searchable lexicon of design, as well as two monographs linking architectural design with practices in philosophy, literature, film and fine art.
