PhD from Harvard University, under Oleg Grabar. Currently professor of Art History at UPSI, teaching art appreciation, Theories of Art, Modern Western Art, Modern Malaysian Art, Islamic Art of Southeast Asia. Author of numerous books, including "Islamic Art of Southeast Asia", Abdullah Ariff: Father of Modern Art in Malaysia", "Merdeka: 50th Anniversary Celebration of Independence", "Alif, Ba, Ta: The Life and Times of Ahmad Khalid Yusof", "Malaysian Landscapes", "Blue Green of the Royal Belum Landscapes", "Batik Painting and Painting Batik", "Northern Vantage: Eleven Penang Artists", "LINK: Penang-Beijing: Artworks from Two Countries", "Vision 2006: Contemporary Art of Malaysia", "Angsana: Essays on Modern Malay Literature". Zakaria Ali has also written three novels, a book of short stories, and numerous exhibitions catalogs. He is also an active painter and dabbles in poetry and travelogues.
