Figen has developed design practise in Istanbul between 1993 and 1999 and in Sydney between 1999 and 2008 and in Sarajevo since 2009. In Istanbul, her design practise produces projects for several residential buildings, motels, office buildings, an exhibition and convention centre and a mosque. Although, she has produced some residential projects in Sydney, she mainly works as heritage consultant who focuses on conservation and restoration of heritage items. This extensive practise area gives her knowledge and experience which includes collaborating with multidisciplinary design teams and several parties such as clients and authorities.
Figen took up the position in Istanbul Technical University as a professor in 2014. She has teaching and mentoring responsibilities of the Bachelor of Architecture students. She teaches computer aided design, computer supported collaborative design, virtual environment design and design representation in digital media. As an academic, she advocates that the communication and information technologies bring new challenges for design education which requires the consideration of new pedagogical approaches employing emerging design fields. She extensively reported these views and her experience of teaching virtual environment design in education and design conferences.
