Betty Torrell is an architect, interior designer, and Associate Professor and Program Director of Interior Design at Morgan State University where her current research focuses on the pedagogy of Professor Emerita Astra Zarina. This work was most recently presented in Civita as "Every Moment a Lesson - The Didactic Approach of Professor Astra Zarina," in April 2019 at the symposium, "AZ - The Italian Legacy of Astra Zarina," organized by Professor Giovanni Attili of La Sapienza University and sponsored by the Commune of Bagnoregio, Italy.

Her research work for her NIAUSI Residency, "Hearth as Home – The Hearths of Civita do Bagnoregio," was a cultural and architectural analysis of more than fifty historic hearths located in Civita. This residency study was a comprehensive documentation of the central feature of the historic houses and public cooking spaces of Civita and is the founding case study for her research on the role of the hearth in domestic architecture.
