The "Island Co-construction Project" is a 20-year rural sustainable development practice initiated by Ideal in the Wild on Huanglong Island, Zhejiang Province. The project aims to use Huanglong Island as a micro-model to systematically explore paths and methods for sustainable rural development.
The project constructs a "four-in-one" co-construction framework around four sustainable dimensions: talent, industry, culture, and ecology. It is committed to stimulating endogenous community motivation and forming replicable and scalable rural development experiences.
The project has initially established a vibrant online co-creation community. As of August 2025, the community has gathered over 3,000 young people worldwide who are interested in and involved in rural development, contributing their wisdom to the project's concepts and practices.
Nestled between the sea breezes and reefs of Huanglong Island in Zhoushan, we have constructed OAS/S-ELY, an art gateway that transcends time.
It resembles both a seabird soaring against the wind for millennia and a nimble spaceship from the future, weaving together ancient maritime civilization, contemporary ecological understanding, and future sustainable visions.
We hope that OAS/S-ELY will be a new narrative space, using tangible forms, perceptible mist, and interactive engagement to bring people and nature closer together once again.
The overall shape of OAS/S-ELY fades from the center outwards, resembling a white bird about to soar over the fishing harbor.
It is both a familiar natural image to Zhoushan for thousands of years and an ancient symbol of maritime civilization.
The seabird's posture above the archipelago symbolizes "arrival";
and the moment its wings unfold signifies the beginning of "set sail".
Exploration is the ancient gene of this sea area; openness and inclusiveness are its attitude towards the future.
When viewed from the front, OAS/S-ELY transforms into a "Gateway Between Mountains and Sea."It connects mountains and sea, symbolizing the overlapping geography of the islands.It connects humanity and nature, implicitly reflecting the inherent flow of Zhoushan culture.It connects city and countryside, presenting a renewed dialogue on lifestyles.The "Gateway Between Mountains and Sea" also signifies that entering the ideal archipelago is stepping towards a more promising way of life.It not only welcomes outsiders to the islands but also guides the islands towards the future.
The hidden mist installation atop OAS/S-ELY transforms the artwork into a constantly shifting "misty island." The combination of mist and white birds creates a soft, flowing, almost ethereal atmospheric landscape.In the island's ecosystem, mist is never mere decoration;it is the embodiment of the island's vitality;it is nature's lightest and most poetic expression.Here, the installation is both a visual landmark and a miniature ecosystem;
it allows nature to be a participant, not an object of observation.
As one sits on the swing and gently sways, the mist above is triggered, disturbed, and reshaped with the movement.It's like touching the island's clouds, as if dancing with nature amidst the clouds.Here, the island's sustainable vision is no longer an abstract concept, but an experience that can be participated in, touched, and recorded.
"OAS/S" presents profound reflections on the course of human development and its future destiny, symbolizing the viewer's yearning for an ideal world—an oasis in people's hearts. It signifies that on the path to the future, we can find our inner sanctuary and an understanding of the world.
In this space, we are guided to contemplate the close connection between humanity and nature, technology and the environment, and to reflect on our responsibility and care for the Earth. We hope to awaken the viewer's awareness of environmental protection and sustainable development, and to work together with them to create a better future.
