This is a refined version of our entry which won the design competition for the new cafeteria building at The National College of Arts, Lahore.NCA is the oldest Arts School in the country and the main challenge for the architects for this competition was to create a building which fulfilled the Schools requirement increasing number of students without it being such a statement that conflicts with the vocabulary of the school buildings designed by the Lahore greats Bhai Ram Singh and Nayyar Ali Dada.We responded with using the same vocabulary as the existing buildings which is brick and concrete. We kept the plan form simple and derived our planning grid from the Nayya Ali Dada building behind the cafeteria structure and the wall on the west side. The building needed visual and noise protection from the west side.We have suggested treated metal sheets with a punched through irregular pattern , imitating the shadow of leaves on the ground.
Due to the paucity of space we can not plant very large trees on the boundary wall. The shade, specially the shade of trees is a welcome relief. We hope to achieve that feeling when the building is complete. We have suggested materials and technology which although basic will be educational for the architecture students of the school through out the construction process.
