This connection serves as an answer to the growing needs of the modern commuter at the metropolitan centre of Thessaloniki thus completing and perfectioning it`s external ring road. The new highway, will by-pass the city centre offering immediate relief of traffic, while ensuring faster overall travel times.
The project is designed with great respect towards the Axios river Delta, an area protected by international conventions, providing an underground passage throughout the protected zone. The tunnel exits on an artificial island constructed approx. 2 km off the shore, where the bridge structure begins.
The steel bridge will become the longest arch sustained bridge measuring over 4 km lengthwise. The deck structure is supported by 16 cyclic arches with lengths varying from 160 m to 220 m each. The central span consists of an arch suspended section with a clearing of 350 m long and 52 m high.
