Endang library is a small library that is attached to primary school buildings, in a village, Indonesia. This building was built by donation gathered by Japanese people who watched a documentary film about a young Indonesian man who has grew up in this village and passed away in Japan. This building should have been designed as a junction of 2 different cultures, Indonesia and Japan, to take over the intimate relationship between 2 countries to children. This is a first library for this village, so this is open for community as well. Books were transported and translated by Japanese volunteers.
The building’s floor area is approximately 70m2, 1/3 of the floor is open air space as terrace and rare pass. And Inside, there are 3 heights of the floor, each gaps are 300mm, to offer children various kinds of sitting space. Sitting on the floor is unfamiliar custom for this village, so we brought this custom from Japan to give special feeling for children to read books. Many windows give good views and lights to inside; low long windows give gentle light to floor, high window offer ventilation and sequence of ceiling plane in and out, vertical window give a green view of rare site, and big sliding doors as entrance connect inside and outside, this library to the playground and classroom building.
