Turkmensahra, the region drafted for designing a self-sufficient city, has many
characteristic aspects. its strategic geographical location – adjacent to the
Caspian Sea-Its unique cultural specifications. Turkmensahra is one of the
few districts of Iran which has not yet experienced an organized civic life and
is currently home to a sophisticated variety of lifestyles – undeveloped civic
life along with animal husbandry and agriculture and nomad life altogether,
which has led to a chaotic distribution of population and a rural-urban context.
My intention for designing a self-sufficient city in Bandar-e-Turkmen is to
initiate a civic transformation in the region. The fundamental design approach
is to satisfy the tribes’ physical needs for food and energy repository. So, by
eliminating their dependence on natural resources by developing a selfsufficient city, it is possible to establish a new lifestyle in this district.
The building’s skin with two or more laminas – relating the season – facilitates
natural ventilation besides its thermal function. The folded layers on the skin
make it more resistant to tornados, besides being an element of beauty. On
the other hand, the two-layer skin and its connection to underground conduits
create air circulation between the two layers in summer which results in
cooling the interior and obstruct still air as thermal insulation in winter.
These are prefabricated units, easy to install and uninstall allow residence to
assemble them anywhere they want, which is aligned by the nomadic lifestyle.
