INTRODUCTION
D1 Architectural Studio collaborated with the coworking chain operator Toong to renovate the Toong Vista Verde offices in District 2, Ho Chi Minh City developed by Singaporean Real Estate Group CapitaLand.
Toong Vista Verde is built on the philosophy that a mindful approach to nature, diversity, and inclusivity can be catalytic for the sustainable growth of society. Incorporating contemplative elements of contemporary art and greenery into the design scheme, we have created a refined yet dynamic environment that can foster connection and build meaningful relationships between people
FINDING INSPIRATION FROM CHALLENGE
Toong Vista Verde is a prime example of creativity that breaks the mold. The initial spatial design posed many original challenges in terms of spatial planning. The project is located in a commercial center, filled with many small shops lined up very close to each other. Brick walls were used extensively which cause a restrained, uncomfortable feeling for the visitors as well as the people who work there. To overcome this challenge, D1 created office blocks in irregular organic forms that resemble water drops – whose shape cannot be defined by any containers. This original design solution revitalizes the space, stimulates creativity, and inspires its inhabitants to break the limit to their own freedom. D1 restricts the use of the walls, using only curtains and glass to ensure privacy for the offices.
GREEN SPACES, GREEN COMMUNITY
D1's designs contribute to society by pursuing the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the most important of which is Goal #3: “Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages” and Goal 11 is to “Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”.
To contribute to the realization of these goals, D1 integrates the green area into all the projects led by our firm. Surrounding the office blocks is a 1500m2 herbal garden with more than 100 varieties. Beyond the practical benefit of supplying fresh air, the plants can dispel all the stress and fatigue during long working days. The garden is a space where people can relax and connect with each other, and it is a unique biosphere in itself.
STRENGTHENING THE CONNECTION BETWEEN ART AND DESIGN
Located right at the entrance of the building is an artwork that embodies the spirit of resilience amidst the pandemic. Titled “BREATH”, the artwork by artist Uu Dam Tran Nguyen is a colorful and lively air-kinetic installation. A well-thought-out concept, BREATH leads one’s eyes from the motorcycle installation at the reception desk over the ceiling to the staircase, passing through 800 colorful balloons, then going up to the second level where a small bar counter with the same rainbow theme.
This is artist Uu Dam's special commission and permanent installation created for Toong Vista Verde, representing a lung that constantly extracts and releases positive “chi” into the Toong Vista Verde habitat in which each person is a continuously evolving cell.
A FOCUS ON PRACTICALITY IN TIMES OF COVID-19
In the COVID-19 context when businesses have to cut off headcounts and expenses for the purpose of cost optimization, Toong Coworking Space has provided an excellent solution. Sharing the shared facilities such as electricity, water, and services such as printing and reception helps offices minimize costs and human resources.
The division of working space into individual offices, coupled with the spacious area helps mitigate the risk of virus transmission and put social distance measures into practice. This open office plan increases safety for employees, allowing them to continue normal business operations, despite looming fear of disease outbreaks.
