"Unearthing Gold at Mapusa Market, Goa " aims at transforming a monotonous market into a fusion of market with buzzing multi functional entertainment space , exhibition space for traditional Goan goods ,cafes for leisure. The fusion of modern with traditional Goan architecture welcomes the users. The design proposal aims at converting a day market to a fully functional 24/7 night market and thus promoting the value of the historical market as a major tourist attraction . The existing shortcomings of sufficient parking, loading and unloading spaces, green open areas and waste management have been resolved . Use of recreational spaces to de- congest the market with an effective design process to eliminate the existing collision of vehicles with pedestrian walkways. The straight linear blocks are broken into a channelized fluid form along with adequate circulation spaces that attracts the user from the entrance. The lack of infrastructure and hygiene for the temporary vendors occupying the streets have been replaced for a skilled atmosphere. Existing shopkeepers are allocated space along the periphery and at the center platforms with storage for minor vendors . The entrance blocks each have two courtyards so people on the ground floor have sufficient light. Outlets for commercial goods are demarked on the first floor and perishable goods on the ground floor. The market blocks have clear alleys or clean cut circulation due to grid planning. The solid waste that is collected on site will be converted to bio-gas and manure while grey water is harvested into a percolation pit. The Mapusa market cannot be substituted effectively by the mall culture or E- commerce, thus the design has been modernized to meet the needs of all age groups and modern trends. The market is only a shopping destination but also a hub of social interaction, thus all proposed activities aim at bringing people bond with each other. Even for someone who does not wish to necessarily shop, the activities still holds an attraction about the market, based on its sheer mood of festivity and vibrancy. All the functions are visually connected to each other and aims at converting a maze like confusing market into a multi functional leisure space.
