“Tendinha da Atalia”
“Chiado”, one of the city quarters of Lisbon, has been considered one of the most intellectual places of Lisbon, a place where people gathered in intellectual debate but also a place of Bohemia. A place frequented by artists and thinkers of all areas, writers, journalists, painters, architects, sculptors, students to name a few who debated politics, literature, architecture and art. Experiences were shared, artwork created, shape and colour would take form, people were moulded as a reflection of the city, of its people and its time.
“Tendinha da Atalaia”, our space, is born in a typical Lisbon type of locale named “Tasca”, a hybrid between a boozer and a cheap eating place, a reflexion of its location merging people and epochs in a combination of tradition and modernism.
The concept is cast out of stories, a livelihood that took place in “Chiado”, documented by any given writer in a loose sheet of paper folded away in one of many beer gardens, leaving to imagination the names of historical figures and places where so much of Lisbon’s history has happened, some of which we remember to this day.
The sheet of paper becomes the interior space as we translate it into a folded zinc plate that bridges the city’s memory with this place architecture created.
