Floating boulevard is an entry for the Gotong Royong city concept design competition for the area Kelapa gading with the theme: "Collaborate".

Design Analysis-The Domino Effect

As a wetland area,Kelapa Gading played a significant role as Jakarta`s water reservoir. On the other hand, considering such area has lesser economic value, the land was converted. The vast development of the area increase the value of the land within, at the same time, leaving lesser area for nature.Lesser green area means lesser area for water reservoir, which impact can be seen through the flood occuring anually throughout the area.
This leads to the poor public facility which then appear as the social impacts.Lesser and poor public facility such as pedestrian ways and open green area means lesser public space for the poeple in the community to interact, building amore individualistic people.

Design concept

development of a built environment is symbolized with alien invasion.the formerly tranquil nature is interrupted by the existence of alien objects (read : buildings), which grows more massively with time, even bigger than nature can hold
mother nature strikes back!

after the chaotic condition left by the myriads of alien objects (read : buildings), people start to re-think and give nature back her rightful place, in order to keep the environment balanced and harmonious.

reciprocity of the alien and the city
although both sides seems to be different, doesn’t mean that they can’t be together in harmony side by side. the existence of nature can support or even beneficiary to the aliens, and vice versa...

Design analogy and interpretation

1.epiphyte: an organism that grows upon or attaches to a living plant
the design acts as a co-existence to the already exist built environment. In order to be able to co-exist with the existing built environment, new structures are to be built with minimal interruption to its existing surroundings. therefore the pad is built up on the trees to fulfill the people’s needs for public space, with a high flexibility of function

2.hydrophyte: an organism that grows upon or attaches to a living plant
the design acts as plants that have adapted to living in or on aquatic environments.the design uses the power of water from the existing river flowing beneath to produce electricity for the new structures

How it works?
The whole design create a vivid separation between different users, yet still able to ensure collaboration between them.Pedestrian ways and vehicular ways are designed to be able to flow as smooth as possible with minimal interruption by creating floating boulevard and the facilities inside possibly needed by the public.
Water management is another major point of the design.Grey water from the buildings along the street are first contained inside a natural water treatment plant located in front of each shophouses before flowing to the river. These grey water treatment plant take form as a mini aquatic garden, filled with hydrophytes suitable to reduce the pollutant contained inside the grey water.
In order to prevent the area from the annual flood, flood sewers are also designed below the street, to catch the unwanted additional water. As an addition the upper part of the sewer can be functioned as a utility area of the area, thus resulting a neater and easier-to-maintain area.
