During his long rule, Ceausescu had not only imposed strong ideologicalcontrol over the people and brought extreme poverty to the country; hehad even physically ruined the centre of Bucharest and destroyednumerous old villages, because he wanted to realize the communistideals of the organization of public spaces. Renata Salecl analyses thedictator`s motives and draws parallels with Western centres ofconsumption and amusement. People living in post-communist countries have great difficultydeciding what to do with the communist monuments and other physicalremnants of the past regime; they are also trying to come to terms withtheir memory of the past. And some are even developing nostalgia forthe old days. How can one understand such nostalgia for thetotalitarian past?
