Eco-towns have popular support, government claims

Five times as many people support the development of eco-towns than oppose them, a new government survey claims.New figures released by Housing Minister Caroline Flint {pictured} showthat 46 per cent of people canvassed in a YouGov survey supporteco-towns in England, compared to just 9 per cent who are opposed.Theresults are in stark contrast to newspaper reports last week thatclaims one of the 15 eco-town schemes shortlisted by Prime MinisterGordon Brown was withdrawn by Lincolnshire`s East Lindsey DistrictCouncil due to public pressure.Flint said: `This is an important consultation, but all voices should be heard, not just those who shout loudest.`Werecognise that some people do have concerns, but this researchunderlines the real recognition among the general public of theimportance of building more affordable homes, and their support for theidea of an eco-town in the local area.` The results alsoshow that more than twice as many people support the development of aneco-town within five miles of their home than oppose, with 34 per centfor and 15 per cent against.
