Black Sheep House
Design brief -To create a modern, open plan living space retaining as much of theexisting building as possible and keeping it within the vernacular. Itwas important to capture the best of the views, blending into thelandscape. The house had to be built by a drystone waller and a joinerwithin a very limited budget. How the brief was met -The owners knocked down one of the existing 3 walls, then repaired andheightened the others. They also built new walls to extend and reshapeoriginal ruin. A turf roof was supported by a hefty Douglas-fir timber frameskilfully constructed on site. A 9 metre semi-circular window took inviews both northwest & southeast. Turf was taken from surroundingland, blending with the old stone to root the house into the locallandscape. All the building work was undertaken by the owners and ajoiner. The interior benefits from heated slate flooring throughout and is deceptively spacious, organically blending both traditional and modern lines.
