Trondheim Kunstmuseum is one of nine museums in Sør-Trøndelag, and is situated centrally in Trondheim. The museum is home to Norway’s third largest public collection of visual arts, and has an active and outwardly oriented profile. The museum has a second division, Gråmølna, situated at Nedre Elvehavn. The venue is dedicated to display artworks by local artists Håkon Bleken and Inger Sitter, who have gifted their works to the museum, as well as work by other contemporary artists both Norwegian and international.
Museene i Sør-Trøndelag, MiST, requires a new Director for Trondheim Kunstmuseum, with an immediate start. This is a six years fixed term vacancy, with the possibility of extension.
The Director is responsible for leading strategic and operational duties at the museum.
Trondheim Kunstmuseum owns Norway’s third largest public art collection, divided over two venues in central Trondheim. The building at Bispegata has a main focus on the collections and modern art, whereas the building at Gråmølna is dedicated to showing contemporary art and the art works gifted by Bleken and Sitter. Trondheim Kunstmuseum is an active museum, producing several exhibitions every year, with accompanying events. There are currently 15.5 FTEs at the museum.
Trondheim Kunstmuseum is part of Museene i Sør-Trøndelag (MiST), a large organisation with potential for further development. The Director at Trondheim Kunstmuseum is a board member at MiST, along with the Administrative Director and the Directors from the other eight MiST museums.
Essential requirements:
- Minimum MA in History of Art or Fine Arts
- Formal leadership training or relevant experience
- Good linguistic skills
- Previous museum experience
The Director at Trondheim Kunstmuseum leads the committed and competent staff, and reports to the Administrative Director of MiST. The Director must display a high level of involvement and convey a clear direction for the museum, contributing to make the museum a functional and leading organisation in its field, as well as a popular visitor attraction.
Trondheim Kunstmuseum is to be developed as an educational hub, offering research resources and active learning programmes. The Director must demonstrate excellent collaboration skills with staff, the MiST board, and external collaborative partners. The Director must include, motivate and inspire his/her employees, and must have the ability to delegate work in order to utilise staff competency productively and ensure a positive work environment.
The successful candidate will have a solid background in the Arts, an ability to see projects through to completion, and to make bold decisions on behalf of Trondheim Kunstmuseum.
