The Franzen Lecture on Architecture and the Environmentis an annual invited lecture by an international figure whose work hassignificant implications for understanding and reconceiving therelationship between architecture and the environment, created in honorof long-time League trustee Ulrich Franzen. The 2007-08 Franzen Lecturewas given by Shigeru Ban on January 22, 2008 at theGreat Hall of Cooper Union in New York City. Japanesearchitect Shigeru Ban’s innovative work tests the limits of structureand form. Often based on elements derived from traditional Japanesearchitecture, his firm’s designs are ecologically sensitive andflexibly programmed, from quickly constructed temporary paperstructures to modular, reconfigurable galleries and pavilions topermanent urban structures. Recent and current work includes theNomadic Museum; the Seikei Library; Papertainer Museum, Seoul; NicolasG. Hayek Center, Tokyo; the Metal Shutter Houses; and the PompidouCenter – Metz.
