For the first timesince it opened in 1950, Frank Lloyd Wright's SC Johnson Research Tower in Racine, Wis., is accessible to the public. With a treelike design of alternating circular and square floors supported by a central core, it's considered one of the most architecturally important buildings of the 20th century. The 15-story structure went through a yearlong renovation in 2013, including the replacement of the 5,800-plus Pyrex glass tubes making up its windows and the more than 21,000 bricks lining the building's exterior. The company is offering tours Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Sept. 28 (midweek tours start May 28); they include a stop at a third-floor exhibition space, with a recreated 1950s laboratory that once housed the manufacturer's research and development team. There, the company first developed brands such as Raid, Glade and OFF! SC Johnson Director of Global Community Affairs Greg Anderegg says the R&D team referred to the building as "a corporate cathedral, an inspiring place to work as any."
