Laying of the foundation stone to the new extension of Kingston Hospital

Today, the laying of the foundation stone to the new extension of Kolding Hospital in Denmark takes place, just one year after the construction work broke ground. In 2010 schmidt hammer lassen architects won the competition to design the masterplan and the 32,000- square-metre new extension that will transform the existing hospital into a regional hospital covering the “Trekantsområde”.

The construction is estimated to be completed in 2015 and will include a new bed ward on top of the existing building, a new emergency ward and a new main entrance.

With the extension, Kolding Hospital will be a modern hospital with an architecture which meets the needs of patients, relatives and staff while maintaining focus on human beings. The new bed ward will be designed with over 200 single rooms offering the patient optimal surroundings to recover.

Another significant design feature will be the relocation of the main entrance to the west of the existing hospital. By relocating the main entrance the hospital gets a whole new identity, and the main entrance becomes visible and clear to patients and relatives. At the same time the internal flow of the hospital is maintained and reinforced, while the entire hospital will be perceived as a complete structure where buildings and the nearby surroundings complement each other.
