Norman Foster and artist, Hiroshi Sugimoto were presented with the inaugural Isamu Noguchi Award by Motohide Yoshikawa, Ambassador of Japan to the United Nations, at the Noguchi Museum’s annual Spring Benefit in New York last night. The award has been established by the Noguchi Museum to recognise individuals that share Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi’s commitment to innovation, global consciousness and Japanese/American exchange.

Noguchi Museum Director Jenny Dixon:

“The Isamu Noguchi Award serves to establish a dialogue with Noguchi’s profound legacy of innovation. We are honored to celebrate Lord Norman Foster and Hiroshi Sugimoto, whose exemplary work we believe demonstrates principles similar to those that inspired Noguchi.”

The Noguchi Museum was founded and designed by internationally renowned, Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988) for the display of what he considered to be representative examples of his life’s work. Opened in 1985, the Museum is housed in a converted industrial building, connected to a building and interior garden of Noguchi’s design. Today, the Noguchi Museum – chartered as The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum – manages the world’s largest and most extensive collection of Noguchi’s sculptures, architectural models, stage designs, drawings, furniture, and lamps, in addition to his complete archives.
