Singapore’s Design-Forward Naumi Hotel

It sits on a street of preserved shophouses—a remnant of colonial-era Singapore—but the Naumi Hotel is far from stuffy. The 73-room stay has edgy mood lighting, artsy video installations and an impressive selection of designer furniture. The property re-opened last November after a year-long, multi-million dollar revamp.

Design: For the refurb, the Naumi’s owners turned to White Jacket, an interior design and architecture practice located in the neighborhood. They gutted the 10-story building’s interiors but kept the aluminum façade, which now hosts a vertical garden to help block out the harsh rays of Singapore’s equatorial sun.

The centerpiece of the hotel is its rooftop infinity pool, where guests lazing under the retractable trellis ceiling enjoy soaring views of the city skyline. Meanwhile, business travelers can work inside wood-paneled meeting rooms, reminiscent of a gentlemen’s club with soft furnishings from Italian furniture-maker Poltrona Frau and Tom Dixon lamps in the shape of firearms.

Rooms: The hotel has almost doubled its room count (its previous incarnation had 40 units), so the designers have had to make smart use of limited space. In entry-level rooms, which start at 28 square meters, pull-out shelves contain complimentary drinks, while a translucent alabaster stone table in which lights are hidden does triple-duty as a lamp, bar and vanity counter. Suspended corner lamps and carpeting made from New Zealand wool flank the bed, which is dressed in 400-thread count Egyptian linen. The bathroom, equipped with amenities from New York’s Malin + Goets, has a privacy glass in the shower that switches between opaque and transparent with the flick of a switch.

While most of the rooms are decked out in calming beige palettes, designphiles should check out the hotel’s four themed suites. The two Coco Chanel-inspired rooms, complete with books celebrating the designer, have black-and-white accents that recall a chic Parisian apartment. The other two suites, which pay homage to Andy Warhol, embrace color and have a cutesy half-egg bathtub tucked away in a circular alcove with sliding doors.

Location: The hotel is nestled in between Singapore’s financial district and its tourist-friendly civic district. The Raffles City complex is a short walk away, as is the august Raffles Hotel, one of Singapore’s oldest lodges and home to plenty of designer clothing labels.

Tip: Worth at least a quick jaunt is the whimsical Mint Museum of Toys, which claims to be the world’s first purpose-built museum for toys and is just across the street from the hotel. After viewing its vast collection—more than 50,000 pieces of childhood memorabilia—get a drink at the museum’s Mr. Punch Rooftop Bar.
