Activism, Arts and Innovation in the Favela: The coming together of the community's contextual intelligence, professional excellence and technology has served as a powerful synthesis for city innovators such as artist Margaret Day, journalist Rene Silva and architects Pedro Henrique and Caroline Shannon de Cristo, founders of +D, who will share their experiences and lead a discussion on their efforts to improve the city of Rio de Janeiro.
Margaret Day is an an artist and earned her a masters in social sciences from Columbia University. She was the first photographer to record the occupation of Rocinha in 2011 and is co -founder of Cidade Unida, recipient of a UN Youth Fund Grant. Her work in Rio continues with the arts and design education Project “Raised in Rocinha.”
Rene Silva created the Voz da Comunidade newspaper at age 11 and now develops social projects in his community, connecting 162,000 people and businesses through social media . He recently released a book, won the prize Prêmio Faz a Diferença from the newspaper O Globo, and is constantly present in the media. Pedro Henrique de Cristo is an architect / concept designer and founding partner of D + / / Design with Purpose , founding director of Parque Sitiê and graduated from Harvard University, where his master's thesis turned into a studio . In 2013, Pedro was selected “Carioca of the Year” by VejaRio magazine. He lives and works in Vidigal favela.
Caroline Shannon de Cristo is an architect / designer and concept of socia -founder of D + / / Design with Purpose . She holds a masters degree in Architecture from Harvard University, from which she graduated with distinction and received the Medal of the American Institute of Architects . She lives and works in the Vidigal favela.
