Designs have been released for ‘the world’s largest airport terminal under one roof’, conceptualised by Grimshaw, Nordic Office of Architecture and Haptic Architects. The trio of firms was appointed by the Turkish consortium of Cengiz, Kolin, Limak, MAPA and Kalyon to design the terminal complex for the new Istanbul Grand Airport.

Ambitious renderings released this week show a grand entrance to the six-runway development. A vaulted ceiling provides a strong sense of directionality, reinforcing passenger flow throughout the terminal building.

Intuitive wayfinding is used throughout the one million sq m complex with natural daylight streaming onto the concourse through generous skylights in the ceiling. This natural light is diffused by the ceiling panels and renderings show perfect rings of light dancing across the terminal floor.

We are delighted to have been appointed to this bold and aspirational project,” says Grimshaw Partner, Andrew Thomas. “We share the consortium’s ambitions to develop a truly outstanding airport design worthy of the world city of Istanbul.

Istanbul Grand Airport will be built in stages with the first phase expected to open in 2018. This first phase will be capable of handling 90 million passengers each year, with the full building able to serve 150 million passengers once complete. The masterplan for the airport is being completed by Arup.
