Fusing nature and ultra modern living, Czech architecture firm S.A.D. Studio has unveiled a modular prefabricated home that can be installed on land or float on the water like a houseboat.
The PORT X house is made from prefabricated C-shaped modules that can be combined in three different versions, including a three-module PORT X space designed for one person, a five-module PORT X ideal for two or three people, and a six-module PORT X that is able to accommodate a whole family.
The PORT X house is made from prefabricated C-shaped modules that can be combined in three different versions.
Architects Jerry Koza and Adam Jirkal from S.A.D. Studio described their project as an original hi-tech prototype designed to create a carefree and relaxing lifestyle combining wood and laminate and featuring soothing curves.
“It is a harbour of thoughts of a free life. PORT X. It defies all deeply rooted notions of a house or houseboat. The curves are inspired by the idea of living hedonism – the motto ‘enjoy life’ is apparent in every detail of PORT X”, they said.
The house was designed to create a carefree and relaxing lifestyle combining wood and laminate to create curves.
The prototype was built on the edge of the Vltava River in Prague. While from the entrance on the shore, the house is completely closed off, providing full privacy from the street, the opposite façade is totally open, with a continuous terrace facing the river.
The smaller three-module PORT X offers 50 squares metres of living space, including one bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe, one bathroom and a living/dining area with a kitchen connected to a decked terrace. The five-module version is 78 squares metres and includes a kitchen and a large living/dining area facing the decked terrace along with two lateral modules that contain one ensuite bedroom and two smaller bedrooms with a shared bathroom.
Wood is the primary material for the interiors.
The architects have also created ‘business-ready’ units, including a 10-module version that could serve as a showroom, modern office or other commercial space. Each configuration can be built either as a land-based version or a floating houseboat accessible through a mobile metal footbridge.

The interiors are flush with wood – it is used for the floors, walls and ceilings – and skylights offer plenty of natural light while LEDs offer electric lighting. The house includes solar panels and wind turbines to allow occupants to live off-grid if desired.

According to the architects, the home is relatively easy to disassemble and transport to another location. Like any other modular prefabricated building, the house can be reused and is expandable to accommodate changing requirements. Modular buildings are ideal for temporary and permanent applications, such as real estate offices, recreational facilities, exhibitions and many other purposes.
The first Port X prototype is being tested and used for a variety of social events, including art and design exhibitions.
