Zoe Lyons, a landscape architecture student at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) has received the Karl Lager Award in Brisbane on 27 March 2014. The award is presented annually by the Australian Institute of Landscape Architect’s (AILA) to a QUT student who demonstrates the aptitude to make significant contributions to the profession in the future.

Lyons’ winning concept focuses on Australia’s forgotten landscapes, exploring the control humans have had on landscapes over time, and the resulting ‘scars’ which accumulate in layers.

“It is the uncovering, understanding and expression of a site’s narrative that not only guides my design process, but also provides me with an answer to the question ‘what belongs here?’” explains Lyons.

As part of her presentation, Lyons explored Nudgee Beach, described as ‘fluid terrain’ (a landscape that is neither land nor water due to the frequency of natural water inundations), and created a design outcome directly responsive to human involvement within the landscape.

Acting Head of School for Landscape Architecture at QUT, Gillian Lawson, said the annual event continues the conversation about what it means to be a young landscape designer in the transformational phase of the Asian century.
