An international jury (including Ben van Berkel and Stefan Diez) judged anonymously out of 4.815 entries from 53 nations the FLAXX chair with the Red Dot Award 2014 for high design quality.
They tested, assessed, criticised and discussed. After a jury session spanning three long days, the team of experts had reached a consensus: the best products of 2014 have been chosen. A record number of designers and companies from all over the world took part in this year’s competition by submitting their innovations for the renowned design award that is the Red Dot. With 4.815 entries, the Red Dot Award: Product Design received the highest-ever number of entries and at the same time added some new countries to the list of participants.
FLAXX a hybrid design which offers the comfort of a free-swinging chair as well as the functionality of a conventional four-legged chair. The novel structure of the support frame and the combination of advantages from both designs is a contemporary interpretation in both form and function. The seat shell and frame are made of 100% recyclable materials. The seat shell is made from natural fibre mats, which are moulded into a stable three dimensional form by pressing multiple layers of the material. The mats predominantly consist of flax, an annually renewable raw material, and are held together by textile polypropylene as an adhesive.
The technology used to manufacture the seat shell originated in the automobile industry and is already used to produce interior components such as door trim panels and cargo area covers.
In the FLAXX Chair, a variation on this technology has been used for the first time in furniture-making in order to combine the benefits of state-of-the-art technology with the requirements of a sustainable materialsconcept. The seat shell can be produced in different colours or with an additional outer layer, for example a cloth surface. Thanks to its weatherproof material, the FLAXX Chair is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
FLAXX is also part of the permanent collection of DESIGN MUSEUM HOLON (IL) and the permanent collection of MAK – the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna (A).
