LIGNANO PINEWOOD Competition

TerraViva Competitions launches LIGNANO PINEWOOD, a new architecture contest that aims to design an Eco- Hotel complex within the characteristic Pine Forest of Lignano Sabbiadoro, while ensuring the valorisation and preservation of its natural environment. Prizes up to 12.000 € will be awarded to the winners selected by an international jury panel composed by, among others, Martina Rosati (Zaha Hadid Architects), Andrea Toccolini (Kengo Kuma & Associates) Tatiana Dimou (Tatiana Dimou Architects).

Brief

Famous for its natural beauty, Lignano’s Pine Forest represents one of the most distinctive locations of the city: a wild environment characterised by autochthonous vegetation typical of the Adriatic coastal dunes. Together with the beach, the Pinewood plays a key role for Lignano’s ecosystem, characterising this littoral town in such a significant way.

Although today a large part of the Pine Forest is protected, several plots are privately owned. The pressures of real estate development in a touristic attraction like Lignano are not few, and the risk of uncontrolled speculation is now stronger than ever. The question that arises then is that of guiding the growth of a city in such a way that it can do so while respecting and valuing the existing natural context.

Although it may seem contradictory at first glance, the integration of new functions within the Pine Forest could generate positive effects in terms of maintenance and care of an area that is currently suffering the effects of neglect. The ambitious goal of this competition is to achieve the incorporation of new Eco-Hotel complex within Lignano’s Pinewood, guaranteeing at the same time the conservation of its natural surroundings.

Guidelines

Participants will take on the task of designing a masterplan capable of integrating and re-establishing the connections between Lignano Pinewood, the pedestrian paths and the waterfront. With the idea of reinforcing this urban axis, the now underused Commercial Plaza should become the point of convergence between forest and sea, giving Lignano a new functional urban space.

Furthermore, contestants will have to concentrate their efforts on the intervention area within the Pinewood, where the primary task will involve the design of an Eco-Hotel complex. The general strategy will have to maintain morphological coherence, prioritising the integration of buildings and pathways with the natural landscape while preserving as many trees and vegetation as possible.

The design must take into account both the choice of materials and the formal image of the volumes, pursuing a harmonious combination with the environment. Regarding the masterplan, buildings may be distributed freely according to the criteria of each designer. Naturally, the layout must be justified through the general concept behind the project.

Requested Material

Competitors have to submit three A1 panels (59,4 x 84,1 cm) landscape oriented + a brief text describing the proposal (from 250 to 500 words). Panels must contain all the necessary graphic information to explain the project in the best way possible (title, diagrams, sketches, 3D visualizations, plans and sections, collages, model photos, etc.). All kinds of graphic representations will be accepted.
