Heatherwick Studio unveiled their proposal for the Shift Landmark, a project that asks us to envision a different sort of public space: one that encourages people to feel informed, connected, and optimistic about our shared climate future.

The Dutch social venture Shift unveiled five shortlisted concepts, including the studio's "Urban Reef."

The Landmark is intended for Waterkant, a brand-new waterfront neighborhood south of Rotterdam with the goal of becoming one of the most progressive urban areas in Europe.

Instead of designing a traditional building, the studio's design aims to create an experience. Visitors pass through a number of areas intended to pique interest and foster comprehension.

An immersive, multimodal exhibition presents the climate crisis without blame or fear while introducing the beauty and vulnerability of the natural world in a grounded, approachable manner.

"The competition has been a chance to think about how buildings can help show that we can live in a lighter way; with less impact on our planet. Our design is a celebration of the possibilities and an invitation to explore them," said Lisa Finlay, Group Leader and Partner at Heatherwick Studio.

"While 75% of Europeans are concerned about climate change, only 10% are taking meaningful action. We want to create a space of wonder, hope and possibility that inspires everyone to take action," said Don Ritzen, Founder and CEO of Shift.

"Shift aims to turn climate ambition into something people can experience. By combining art, architecture, innovation and education, the Landmark is designed to make a circular future visible, tangible and irresistibly compelling, giving millions a clear pathway from inspiration to action," Ritzen added.

The structure builds the narrative of climate action from the ground up, much like a reef. The trip then begins with a bright area that showcases global tales and useful concepts, demonstrating how genuine, positive change is already taking place.

Simple solutions, such as personal carbon footprint scanning, assist guests in understanding their own influence as they depart without passing judgment. The goal is to provide people with a distinct sense of agency by modest, encouraging actions they may take right away.

The building itself embodies the brief's goal of creating a landmark that is both adaptive and regenerative, much like coral reefs. The idea suggests a timber construction with modular components that may be rearranged when science and exhibition content change in order to minimize embodied carbon. Waste is decreased by using recyclable and biobased materials for the exterior skin and interior finishing.

Biodiversity is highlighted by the surrounding landscape. In addition to providing guests with peaceful moments, a series of outdoor rooms and planted terraces will support indigenous species.

The building offers a pleasurable public experience while being environmentally efficient thanks to natural ventilation tactics, daylit interiors, and integrated water management technologies.

The winning design will be announced in the spring, and the successful team will enter a participation process with local communities.

The transformation of Nodeul Island by Heatherwick Studio achieved a significant milestone in Seoul. In addition, Heatherwick Studio's first continental Europe Landmark, Savarin, started construction in Prague.
