"Once upon a time there was a road in the heart of Livorno, where you could walk under the arcades and suddenly you were kidnapped by the smell of freshly baked bread. The children ran with some coins in their hands to ask for the schiacciata, while adults, closing their eyes, recalled their childhood, when the nanny was called with her name and the bakery shop was like a family," explains Modo. 

This was the concept that led the Italian architectural practice Modo to the creation of "Star Bakery", a bakery with a metropolitan flavor but with an authentic heart and a bit nostalgic located in the Tuscan city of Livorno.

"The intent of our client was to create a space where they could enjoy products prepared with great majesty and highlight finished products from Tuscan companies." 

The project was inspired by the the model of bakeries you can find outside Italy, where you can buy bread, pizza and enjoy them comfortably seated in a comfortable environment.

The small size of the shop and the family management reminds the authentic taste of home-made bread," says Sondra Pantani and Pietro Marsili of Modo.

Spaces needed to be re-arranged in order to make them functional to the new activity. Two main areas have been identified: a technical area (laboratory, locker room, bathroom) and a public area with a counter, a toilet, displays for finished products and space to sit comfortably to enjoy the homemade food.

“The large windows offer a large view between interior and exterior. To underline this particular sight, the laminate floor has been replaced with the original Palladian floor you can also find under the arcades. White tiles, wood and industrial shelving are the other materials we have mixed together to give a warm atmosphere to the bakery” concludes Modo.

Star Bakery is located in the heart of Livorno, in the street that leads from Piazza Grande, one of the main squares of the city, to the square of the Municipality.
