Spanish architecture studio SelgasCano has completed Second Home's Hollywood campus with yellow working pods by adding 6,500 trees and plants on a former car park.
SelgasCano first revealed plans in June this year to design Second Home's first US campus, after a five month period, the campus is now open for its users who want to work and collaborate in a greenery environment.
Second Home is a London-based company creating workspaces and cultural venues for entrepreneurship and networking, it is the new campus in East Hollywood and is the first US location of the company in Los Angeles, after it established locations in London and Lisbon.
Named Second Home Hollywood, the campus comprises sixty glazed and curvilinear working pods dressed with yellow rooftops. All working pods are scattered among a lush forest in which 6,500 trees and plants are filled.
Sitting on a 4,645-square-metre garden, the site was used as a car park before and now it is described as LA's densest urban forest. The campus also includes a historic building designed in the 1960s by Paul Williams - the first African-American to be admitted to the American Institute of Architects.
Second Home described the campus "it is the co-working oasis in the concrete jungle". The campus can accommodate there different types of groups: small teams of up to 40, medium teams of up to 55 and large teams of up to 135.
Each pod can has a own private and secure gated entrances with access control. The campus consists of architect-designed tables around the edge of the studio, all with direct views of the garden, as well as architect-designed table in the center of the studio for collaborative work and HOWE-designed bespoke chairs.
The campus includes an in-house restaurant and bar with central courtyard for all-day dining. It houses events with auditorium for 200 people and a public-facing library bookshop.
"Our Hollywood site is a mix of beautiful workspaces created for individuals and teams. It's co-working with soul," said Second Home.
Rohan Silva, co founder and co-director of the company with Sam Aldenton, said: "elsewhere, we worked incredibly hard to bring nature into buildings, but with L.A’s outrageously good weather, it’s the reverse: we’re immersing the buildings in nature."
"The idea is to create places where everyone can be inspired and productive, where there’s a community rich in different skills and talents, where spontaneous collisions and collaboration can happen," added Silva.
The rooftops of the pods were built from cross-laminated timber (CLT), a wood panel product made from gluing layers of solid-sawn lumber together. All the plants were brought from Southern California including some species adapted to Los Angeles' dry and hot weathers. If necessary, the plants will be watered by using a smart controller technology.
Within the campus, there are several wooden pathways around the pods and greenery to connect different tenants each other. In the outside, many tables and chairs, wooden decks help the tenants chill out and socialize.
