The Dutch national railway infrastructure organisation ProRail has assigned a team consisting of Mecanoo and engineering consultancy Movares to redevelopment of Ede train station and its immediate surroundings. Together ProRail, the City of Ede and principal passenger railway operator NS are eager to transform the area into a showpiece for the city and the Veluwe area. The vision presented by Mecanoo and Movares proved the most successful on all accounts during the tendering stage.
Redeveloping Veluwse Poort
The city of Ede is currently redeveloping the eastern part of the city, the Veluwse Poort. The train station area acts as an important link in the chain between the city and the Veluwe National Park, and therefore needs to fit both the urban context and the surrounding landscape appropriately. With remarkable architecture and optimal integration of utility buildings, public space, railway infrastructure and other modes of transport, the station will become a pleasant and vibrant centre for the Veluwse Poort.
Recognizable design
The Mecanoo designed transport hub will act as a landmark for the region. The design is defined by an unobtrusive appearance; the natural environment serves as a starting point for the characteristic materialization that connects the buildings and the station square, emphasising the area’s built identity. The open wooden canopy of the station allows for soft light to come in and offers remarkable views of the Mauritskazerne and surrounding landscape. Because of the concentration of mobility flows, transfer times between different modes of transportation will be short. Besides being sustainable, the transparent design and wide station passageway will provide an environment that is secure.
