Coastal Resilience Conference 2014

Strategies For Building and Preserving Resilient Coastal Communities
October 8-10, 2014 – Galveston, TX

Galveston Historical Foundation’s Center for Coastal Heritage, in partnership with University of Texas Medical Branch’s Center in Environmental Toxicology, is organizing a three day conference on coastal resilience scheduled for October 8-10, 2014. This conference will provide a platform to discuss the challenges and strategies for building and preserving a resilient Gulf Coast. We will explore the connections between the natural environment and the cultural heritage of coastal populations.

Across the themes presenters will comprise collaborative stakeholders such as civil engineers, urban planners, architects, preservationists, policy makers and scientists.

Theme 1: The Resilient Gulf Coast

This session will focus on how to best sustain and fortify our coastline.

Speakers will address coastal hazard mitigation, coastal management strategies, land use planning, and multi-agency emergency management.

Theme 2: The Resilient City

This session will focus on how to best plan and assess a strong urban environment.

Speakers will address planning and policy, safeguarding historic resources, smart growth, and strategies for merging our natural environment with our built environment.

Theme 3: The Resilient Neighborhood

This session will focus on how to best foster social cohesion and preserve our cultural resources.

Speakers will address social and cultural aspects of resilience, community health, the “Whole Community” approach disaster response, and safeguarding our cultural resources.

Theme 4: The Resilient Building

This session will focus on designing, preparing, and preserving our historic building stock.

Speakers will address sustainable building, coastline building strategies, building design, and insurance for historic properties.
