The city has just received 14 new design proposals for the two remaining housing developments on the southern edge of Brooklyn Bridge Park, a site that has been the focus of a contentious affordable housing debate; namely whether such units should be added to the coveted waterfront site. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corp., which runs the park, will discuss the new proposals in a meeting today.

The newly received designs come in response to call for proposals back in May for housing concepts that could integrate below market-rate units into a larger market-rate scheme. The inclusion of 30% affordable housing in the two towers was a request made by Mayor de Blasio when it was determined that only 70% of the housing planned for the park would be needed to support the park’s upkeep. Since the announcement, community groups have been steadfast in trying to stop the project, saying that the addition of affordable housing would mean less money for maintenance of the park; while others are simply keen on keeping the waterfront building heights low (as to not obstruct views from their homes, surely). Naysayers have even filed a lawsuit to keep the project from moving forward.
Protesters are expected at today’s meeting, but according to the Journal, “Park officials said they were hopeful the quality of the proposals would help refocus the community conversation from a testy debate over the de Blasio administration’s requirement that developers dedicate at least 30 percent to affordable housing.”

All 14 proposals have been revealed and come via BIG, Asymotote Architecture, Marvel Architects, andNV/da + O’Neill McVoy, to name a few. We’re especially loving the NV/da+O’Neill McVoy design which appears to implement some interesting angles, lots of green space at each floor, and an aesthetic that references the area’s industrial past. If a design is approved, and the lawsuit is resolved, the project could break ground in about a year.
