The Best Use of Colour Prize went to the Fitzroy Crossing Renal Hostel in Australia designed by Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects - the project was praised for using colours as a "sensitive, elegant and well balanced" at this year's World Architecture Festival awards.
The building provides a long term accommodation facility for Aboriginal people from outlaying communities receiving renal dialysis. The aim of the centre is to humanely support the needs of the residents, who may be self sufficient and independent, or may have a carer living with them.
The architecture facilitates a safe environment to wander and gather with occupants, family, friends and the community.
Light is filtered through the coloured screens that run along the side of the structure. Judges praised the practice for "a design that uses holistically integrated colour relative to the landscape and the local community. As the project’s main function is healing, the use of colour creates an emotional context that is deeply supportive and nurturing."
The project was selected by WAF's 2017 Super Jury chaired by James Timberlake of Kieran Timberlake. Other jury members included OMA partner Ellen van Loon, WOHA founder Mun Summ Wong, Ian Ritchie of Ian Ritchie Architects and Christoph Ingenhoven of Ingenhoven Architects.
A record number of submissions were received for this year’s World Architecture Festival Awards, which attracted a record high number of attendees for its tenth anniversary edition, the programme of which was themed around 'Performance'.
Programme Director Paul Finch announced at the event's closing ceremony that World Architecture Festival will be moving to Amsterdam in 2018, and will take place at the RAI venue from 28-30 November next year.
World Architecture Community is media partner for this year's World Architecture Festival. The annual World Architecture Festival (WAF) took place this year between 15-17 November, which concluded on Friday at the Arena Berlin, in Germany.
