ESPÅÑÓPTICØ is the winning entry of the ARQUIA National Competition designed by Eduardo Camarena who worked with Bjarke Ingles and other architecture firms from Madrid to Chicago.
Panopticon:imagined in 1791 by philosofer Jeremy Betham, this jail concept consisted of a series of cells distributed along a circle and the vigilant placed at its center, being able to control everyone without moving.
ESPÅÑÓPTICØ:as an inversion of the previous layout, the inmates are placed in the center and the watchers are around. Addressing the Spanish crisis as required by the competition scheme, our prisoners are 7 people involved in the Spanish construction boom and its crash: an architect, a major, a banker, a promoter, a speculator citizen, a jury and a city councilor.
Each of their cells is designed to punish the inmates in a way that is related to the role they played in this economic explosion. Being close they can´t talk or touch each other, neither get out and enjoy the impressive arctic landscape. In the perimeter there is a circular corridor where the vigilants, Spanish people affected by the crisis contemplate their suffering.
