D. Material Explorations: Surface articulation and the fabrication process | Field Trip!     4 LU CEU Credits

As architectural expression starts to explore the limits of surface articulation, established facade materials and fabrication techniques are undergoing a transformation. The Perot Museum by Morphosis and the SFMOMA by Snohetta are two buildings from high profile architects, of similar typology and similar material intent, implemented through contrasting methodologies. But how was the facade design influenced by the fabrication technology selected? This workshop traces the process from beginning to end, from the perspective of designer and fabricator, looking at not only the pros and cons of material selection, but also fabrication techniques, façade installation and final effect. The afternoon will include joint presentations by each of the design teams, exploration of the material properties, and group discussion. Participants are encouraged to come with tectonic inquisitiveness!
