''The State of Architecture: Practices and Processes in India'' presents the state of contemporary architecture in India within a larger historical overview since independence, which was opened in 6 January 2016 in Mumbai. It maps emerging practices but also discusses the aspirations they represent, and stimulate a conversation on architecture among the architectural fraternity, patrons and public at large. Embodying a spectrum of positions that characterise architectural production in India, the content is intended to be provocative and make explicit the multiple, and often simultaneously valid, streams of architectural thought and engagement that truly represent the pluralism of India.
The exhibition is also accompanied by other related and allied events such as smaller exhibitions, symposia, lectures, award ceremonies, etc. It is a project of the Urban Design Research Institute (UDRI), Mumbai. The other allied events are ttitled: 'The State of Profession', 'Keynote Lectures', 'Windows and Mirrors: Reflecting on Recent Architecture In South Asia'.
The State of Architecture: Practices and Processes in India will also be presented at Kala Ghoda Festival within the scope of 'Architecture Week', which will be held between 8 – 13 February, 2016 at Goethe–Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan, Mumbai. Programmed by architectural critic and theorist Kaiwan Mehta, this week-long series will comprise a set of panel discussions and master classes by eminent and emerging practitioners. Master Classes will be based on the theme of Public Life and Architecture.
Panel discussions will focus on ‘travels and travails’ of architects in India today along with struggles and ideas that shape design concerns and processes in India today.
