London is at once modern and ancient, sprawling and walkable, a city of Anglo-Saxon pomp that is surprisingly polyglot. The growing population — now 8.6 million, an increase of nearly 2 million over the last 25 years — symbolizes the global resurgence of cities. Yet soaring rents and a threat to urban character have many Londoners asking a question that's increasingly heard in Chicago: Just who is our city for?
London is certainly there for us, the tourists, who take cruises down the River Thames, flock to Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey, queue up to learn the grisly lore of the Tower of London, marvel at the retail theater of Harrods, and stroll the city's lovely parks.
