Dieter Kienast- Stadt und Landschaft lesbar machen

by Anette Freytag

The Swiss Dieter Kienast (1945-1998) is a key figure in the European landscape architecture. At a marked turn in the social understanding of nature, he sought a synthesis between design and ecology, without being hostile to the city or attached to a sentimentalist nature. His freeraces were intended to make the resolving opposites of the city and the country readable and, in their aesthetic experience, to support the management of an increasingly complex everyday life.

In her book Anette Freytag offers the first critical examination of Kienast's realized work, his design attitude and his theoretical positions. It also illuminates a concise epoch of the landscape architecture that has struggled since the 1970s to become an integral part of urban development and the impetus for large-scale planning. Dieter Kienast became her charismatic leader. He has recognized, named and challenged the new challenges as a designer, planner, researcher and university lecturer. Urban development criticism, participation processes and the importance of the spontaneous vegetation of the city play a role as well as art, literature, architecture and the popular culture of postmoderne.
