Mustapha Ben Hamouche is associate professor in architecture at the University of Bahrain. He holds a Docotorate from the Institut Français d’Urbanisme, Paris VIII University (1994); a Master of Philosophy in Housing (MPhil) from the Faculty of Arts (1986), University of Newcastle upon Tyne and a Diplome d’Etat d’Architecte (BSC) from EPAU, the Ecole Polytechnique d’Architecture et d’Urbanisme, Algiers (1983). He joined the University of Blida, Algeria in 1986 and taught there for nearly 10 years where he was also in charge of postgraduate studies and research programme. From 1995 to 1999 he left academia and worked as an Expert-Planner in Town Planning Department of Al-Ain, UAE for four years. He published seven books and 40 papers in Arabic, English and French on urbanization in the Gulf, urban history in North Africa, and the impact of Islamic law on the built environment in traditional Muslim cities. At present he is working on the application of Chaos, Fractals and Cellular Automata theories to traditional urban fabrics. He is also leading a research team at the University of Bahrain on the application of GIS to Urban Development in Bahrain. He conducted many workshops on Urban Planning, Housing and the application of GIS on Planning. Recently (sept-dec. 2008) he was appointed as a member of the High Committee for the assessments of proposals for the Third Extension of the Al-Haram in Mecca.
