the Gateway • the Pathway • the Way of Communication/ Located in Zibo, the gateway is the entrance of a community and a spiritual landscape in the urban context. Two isomorphic gates compose the pathway on the winding road, integrating the functional and the ritual through reinterpreting the traditional spatial sequence prototype of Multiple Paifang (memorial gateway), thus create a public space for the communication between the community and the city.
On the two bronze gates, there are hollowed-out ancient Chinese characters Chun and Qiu, i.e. spring and autumn. Through the pathway, views vary stage by stage. With ginkgoes and mirroring pool, the Zen-like landscape reflects the changing process from spring to autumn; with rotatable gate wings, the gateway presents the metaphor of natural flexibility and variation. The gates also symbolize the Spring and Autumn Period when intellects of Confucianism, Taoism, etc. assembled in the earliest Chinese academy in Qi State, of which Zibo was the capital. By arousing the collective memory of the history, the gateway awakens communication between the contemporary and the traditional with respect.
