IMI, KOLKATA

The sky with its various states and ever changing colors is one of the most dynamic elements of nature and is what has inspired the built form façade of “IMI Kolkata” with the colored laminate glass which follows no repetitive pattern and is symbolic of the unpredictable nature of the sky as well as the vibrancy of today’s youth.
The site, situated in a very dense residential urban fabric, was a huge constraint and dictated linear planning and special efforts were made to ensure create non-monotonous spaces which did not follow expected linear pattern. The latest technological provisions in the institute allow for worldwide exchange of knowledge, through conventions and seminars and architectural language of the built form is a representation of this.
Circulation spaces and spill out zones have been created along this curved glass façade, allowing them to be naturally lit in the day and giving them a more interesting and dynamic feel, even more so in the night.
An integrated plaza with a water body receives no direct sunlight and creates a comfortable micro-climate.
It is an institute that has achieved international standards not only by providing state of art facilities but also by having an architectural expression which represents that.

2 layers of 5mm each Vanceva glass with a 1mm PVB insulating layer is what makes up the chromatic glass facade. The insulating layer prevents the build up of excess heat inside despite the entire facade being of glass. The colored glass filters in light, allowing the interior spaces around
to be naturally lit.

Cavity walls on the exterior reduce heat build up inside. The glazing has been designed recessed to the cavity wall ensuring that it is shaded and transfer of heat through the openings are reduced.

There is an STP on site. The water requirement for the AC plant is met by the water that is recycled in the STP.
