The Shift by Kerem Piker selected for the project of the Turkey Pavilion at Venice Biennale 2018

The Shift by Kerem Piker has been selected to be exhibited at the Pavilion of Turkey during the Venice Architecture Biennale 2018, which will be held between May 26 - November 25, 2018.

Following an open-call and a two-stage evaluation, the selection committee has selected the project that will be exhibited at the Pavilion of Turkey, organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV) - who is currently supporting the 15th Istanbul Biennial under the theme of "a good neighbour".

Selected from among 31 eligible projects, The Shift was selected by the jury due to "its highly competent and authentic spatial construction, and its dynamic and interactive process design that held a promise to change through time and to allow international participation.

The selection committee included Prof. Dr. Sibel Bozdoğan, Levent Çalıkoğlu, Prof. Dr. Arzu Erdem, Prof. Dr. Murat Güvenç, Yeşim Hatırlı, Prof. Dr. Suha Ozkan, President of World Architecture Community and Prof. Dr. Uğur Tanyeli.

The Shift curated by Kerem Piker, founder of Kerem Piker Architecture (KPM), will be displayed at the Pavilion of Turkey and the project is distinguished through its flexible layout and program which creates an open and "freespace", as directly referring to the theme of the Biennale.

Kerem Piker's design scheme proposes a spatial organisation for meeting, encountering and architectural production. Associated with the theme of Biennale "Freespace", the Pavilion of Turkey will welcome architecture students, who will be hosted by IKSV in shifts, throughout the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale.

"Following an international open call, undergraduate and graduate students of architecture will be expected to visit the biennale, participate in the designated workshop programmes and contribute to architectural production with using various media," said IKSV, in a project description.

"The exhibition content is expected to derive and flourish from this programme of workshops, performances and the participants’ individual contributions in situ, as well."

Cansu Cürgen, Yelta Köm, Nizam Onur Sönmez, Yağız Söylev and Erdem Tüzün will be taking part as assistant curators during the project. Details regarding the Pavilion of Turkey will be announced in 2018.

Kerem Piker, 39, founded his office Kerem Piker Architecture in 2011 in Istanbul. In 2010, he was awarded as one of "The Best 40 Architects Under The Age Of 40 in Europe" by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design. He is the winner of many architectural competitions both nationally and internationally.
