Surftopia is a competition project designed by Eduardo Camarena&María Urigoitia in 2014 and it shows how to deal with 100 housing units over the beach without interrupting the landscape?
Surftopia addresses this delicate issue through the observation of human activity on the beaches. This temporary colonization is often determined by the use of umbrellas that deploy acting as occupation indicators.
The proposal is closer to a land art intervention than to a regular housing block. It dialogues with the environment through a series of responsive masts that open and close like umbrellas depending on the amount of surfers that are using the beach in a certain moment of the year.
When closed they work as vertical elements that allow visuals and regular seaside activities in between them as they are separated at least 20 meters from each other. However, when rented they enlarge themselves through the deployment of the tensile structure, resulting in a fully equipped living unit.
