Chicago Expander - A New Research Program at Archeworks

Call for Applicants

The CHICAGO EXPANDER is a research initiative at Archeworks that constructs new discourses on regionalism and recasts Chicago and its region as a spatial model. Co-directed by Iker Gil and Antonio Petrov, this program consists of three intensive multidisciplinary, collaborative workshops held between late January and late March, 2013. Workshop time will be divided between group and independent research activities, participant discussions, guest lectures, and field investigations using Chicago as our laboratory. Participants will share the outcome of their investigations in private and public reviews.

Work generated in these workshops will be part of a CHICAGO EXPANDER-Archeworks public forum and exhibition on display in Summer 2013. Our program will kick-off in January 2013 with a public lecture co-hosted with the Graham Foundation featuring Hashim Sarkis, professor at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design.

The inaugural CHICAGO EXPANDER workshop will take place at Archeworks beginning January 28 through February 15, 2013. (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm). Applications are due Friday, November 30, 2012.

Seeking Multidisciplinary Participants
We are seeking open-minded participants, interested in researching, discussing and addressing the issues that affect the way we understand the Chicago region. Architects, urban designers, graphic designer, public policy makers, sociologists, economists, ecologists, photographers as well as participants with other backgrounds interested in this approach are encouraged to apply. Consistent with Archeworks’ approach to engaged learning, each participant will contribute his/her own disciplinary perspectives-creating a unique interactive environment for critical study, design research, and productive speculation.

Please go to archeworks.org/chicagoexpander to learn more about the program and to download an application.
