The best known and loved herbalist is John Gerard, born in Cheshire, England (1545-1612). His “Herball” or “General Historie of Plants” first published in 1597 contains other herbalist’s flowers to be considered the greatest book on the subject, but it has remained popular for over 400 years. Two hundred years later, Henry Phillips described the change that had come to the neighborhood since Gerard had cultivated his garden there.
