is the leadingorganization promoting walkable, mixed-use neighborhood development,sustainable communities and healthier living conditions.For nearly twenty years, CNU members have used theprinciples in CNUs Charter to promote the hallmarks of New Urbanism,including:  
 * Livable streetsarranged in compact, walkable blocks. 
 * A range ofhousing choices to serve people of diverse ages and income levels.   
 * Schools, storesand other nearby destinations reachable by walking, bicycling or transitservice.  
 * An affirming,human-scaled public realm where appropriately designed buildings define andenliven streets and other public spaces.

Established by co-founders Andres Duany, Peter Calthorpe,Elizabeth Moule, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, Stefanos Polyzoides and Dan Solomonand supported today by distinguished board members and other thought-leadersfrom the worlds of urban design, development and government policy, CNU worksto deliver these hallmarks to communities across North America and overseas onmultiple scales. Settings where new urbanists are active include both emerginggrowth areas and brownfields, suburbs and small towns where New Urbanism caneither reinforce the character of existing walkable areas or help toretrofit automobile-oriented malls and office parks to becomewalkable communities. The principles of New Urbanism are also central to makingwhole regions more livable, coherent and sustainable.With a history of forming productive alliances, CNU has beenat the forefront of efforts to reform how we design and build communities andtheir infrastructure.
