Swiss firm Herzog & de Meuron gets final planning approval from London mayor Sadiq Khan for Chelsea FC London StadiumThe plans of the stadium were approved by the City Council in January and the project was awaiting for the mayor's approval, stated by Hammersmith & Fulham.

Hammersmith & Fulham Council has today announced that London mayor Sadiq Khan supports City Council's decision to move forward for the redevelopment of the stadium and the delivery of the extensive local community programme.

Herzog & de Meuron had released updated images of the stadium last year -the firm's proposal is inspired by London's particular context and urban fabric. The £500M Chelsea FC London Stadium will be constructed in the place of existing football stadium at Stamford Bridge and features from 41,837 to 60,000-seat capacity.

The Gothic-inspired structure shows that a historical ribbed-shell structure displays nude, distinct and perfect volume in the context that interacts with public and supporters very well because of its irregular form.

Herzog & de Meuron's new design rises on 264 slender brick piers that wraip up the whole structure. The stadium features Victorian-era brick terraces, which are reinterpreted with a pure expression referring to a solidity and textural materiality.

The outer appearance of the structure is reduced with piers and becomes more open to the public with its functionality and to take the public inside. This transperancy is some sort of responce to the historical context of the city and gains more caharcteristic approach in order to interact with it.

New Chelsea Football Stadium also includes other facilities like a club shop and museum, and separate restaurant and café use.

Our design "capture the spirit of the local heritage in a contemporary sculpted form that will respond to the local townscape and to neighbours’ views and light. The structure will have a lightness of expression when viewed directly but also a solidity and textural materiality when seen obliquely'' said Herzog & de Meuron.
