Winy Maas Received "Oris Award For An Outstanding Contribution To Architecture", during the architectural symposium "Days of Oris"

Days of Oris 14 have just finished. During the two days of the symposium we have had the opportunity to listen to the lectures from all parts of the world delivered by diverse speakers.

After the welcome speeches of Mayor Milan Bandic and President Ivo Josipovic, the Oris Tehnoplast award ceremony took place. The Oris Tehnoplast award for an exceptional architectural project (sports hall of primary school Fran Krsto Frankopan) was given to Idis Turato, and the Oris Tehnoplast award for an outstanding contribution to architecture was handed out to Winy Maas (MVRDV).

The programme, moderated by Maroje Mrduljaš and Dinko Peracic, started after the short presentation delivered by the president of the Croatian Chamber of Architects,Tomislav Curkovic.

The first lecture was delivered by Winy Maas. It was prepared as an overview of his working week and took us to different parts of the world; from the opening of Markthal in Rotterdam to the towers in Singapore. The architecture of MVRDV is bold and witty, but not reckless. On the contrary! Shifts in the perception and new ways of thinking is what we will take form this lecture.

Pascal Flammer is a Swiss architect who gained experience in the studio of Valerio Olgiati. His work is an unusual combination of poetics and precision. He aims to create more than a utility-based building and, to achieve that, he uses witty procedures which make the houses he designs extraordinary.

Miquel Adrià was the next speaker. This architect and theoretician is the founder ofArquine magazine, the leading architectural magazine in Middle and South America. His lecture dealt with the past and the influences of Le Corbusier’s architecture on Mexican architects of the twentieth century. Through the works of several most prominent architects of the time, he gave us insight into the development of architecture in that part of the world.

The work of Mauricio Rocha could simply be described as the architecture of the senses. Regardless if he is designing state buildings, the Centre for the blind or the School of visual arts, he devotes his attention to the details which help us experience architecture with our whole body. He mostly uses local materials in the projects which relate to the natural landscape.

The last speaker on Saturday was Idis Turato, the winner of the Oris Tehnoplast award for an exceptional architectural project. His lecture presented his way of thinking and the ideas he is consistently applying in his projects. He is intensely involved in the study of the city and interventions into the urban area.

The programme on Sunday started by the lecture by Gonçalo Byrne, a Portuguese architect who has completed numerous projects which are dealing with the revitalization of architectural heritage. Byrne approaches the problem very thoughtfully and carefully reveals the layers of the past thus giving the visitors the opportunity to experience them. He gives special attention to the exterior areas which he is carefully introducing into the interior and so creates special spatial experiences.

Emilio Tuñón presented the projects he had completed with his partner Luis Mansilla, who passed away two years ago. The lecture titled Architecture of memory showed their projects of interpolations; the buildings where they had devoted special attention to the relations with the pre-existing state. They also deal with the relation of the city and the building and the building and the city.

Anupama Kundoo is an Indian architect, currently working in Madrid. In her 25-year long career she was involved in design, urban planning, art installations and teaching. Her architecture focuses on sustainability and minimum use of resources and she emphasizes human experience and work as the main sources of inspiration. She believes that common sense is most important because luxury is not in the material, but in the very space it is creating.

Jurij Sadar represented the work of architectural studio SADAR+VUGA. The lecture was titled Production of Publicness. He spoke about the importance of the design of the public area within the scope of architecture and the responsibility of an architect to shape the clash between the exterior and the interior area. Their buildings were shaped with the idea of the relation towards the city and their aim is to generate new public areas.

The second speaker from Slovenia was Peter Gabrijelcic, the Dean of the Ljubljana Faculty of Architecture. He presented the projects of his studio, from bridges to family houses. According to him, architecture has to solve spatial conflicts and enable us do things we never thought were possible. He skilfully uses technology in his projects in order to consistently apply the ideas and concepts.

The last speaker at this year’s Days of Oris, Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli, is a member of the OMA-AMO team. He presented his work on the project Fundementals at this year’sVenice Architecture Biennale, as well as the concept of the Monditalia exhibition. We also had the opportunity to see the works of OMA-AMO in the field of scenography and their cooperation with Prada.
